How to Build an Impressive Set of Shoulders
By Bill Davis
A set of great shoulders is
impressive in appearance. You look better, your waist looks smaller, and you have a physical presence that
not a lot of others possess.
Here's a simple shoulder workout that will build the delts, traps, and tie-ins that will have you standing out
at the beach this summer.
First, you need to build a balanced set of deltoids: The front, side, and posterior deltoids must
be developed evenly. Often, especially with advanced trainers, the front delts are over developed to the
detriment of the lateral and posterior heads.
One of the things you might want to consider is working out your weak points first in your
workouts. This might mean that you work your side and rear heads first. Here's how I would address
that.

Use a superset of pre-exhaust bent-over laterals or side laterals with military presses. I
personally like doing a set of 15-20 bent laterals, followed immediately by 6-8 reps of military presses.
Another exercise I like that hits all three heads of the deltoid is the "Arnold Press" (named after
Arnold Schwarzenegger). You perform this one with dumbbells. holding them as you would at the finish of a
dumbbell curl, and then rotating your wrists outward as you press up. This one can be a killer!
Finally, you'll want to build the traps by doing shrugs and/or upright rows (which also strongly
hit the front and side heads of the shoulder). For shrugs, do 2-3 sets of 6-8 reps, for the rows, 2-3 sets of
12-15.
You can build "barnyard wide" shoulders. It's hard work, but very easy in concept. The idea is to
develop all three heads in proportion and build the traps for the tie-ins you need to make your shoulders really
stand out.
